Why Do Other Candles Burn Black Soot?
Insufficiently made candles can burn black soot due to several factors, such as low-quality wax, and fragrance oils, the presence of carcinogen containing additives like paraffin, paraben, phthalates, colorants, uv inhibitors, chemical stabilizers, lead, zinc, and a poorly designed wick. When the candle burns, these impurities can create the black soot that stains jars, walls, and ceilings, leading to poor indoor air quality and potential health hazards.
The quality of the wax plays a crucial role. Paraffin wax and paraffin hybrid wax, which comes from petroleum, coal and oil shale, and is commonly found in traditional candles. Due to being a petroleum byproduct, it is more likely to produce soot, and contains carcinogens vs. clean-burning options like soy. Additionally, most soy is grown in South America where they are cutting down the Rainforest to make room for farming soy, and that isn’t good for us or the Earth. Many people also disapprove of Beeswax because native bee colonies have been at risk, and are considered to have been exploited in the production of commerce products. The concern is that their health may be sacrificed when the beeswax is harvested. So what is the best option?
At Healing Light Soy Candles®, we use eco-friendly, sustainably grown, USA farmed soy wax and eco-friendly USA wicks, which not only burns cleaner but also minimizes soot production. We use only the highest quality, eco-friendly, USA fragrance oils, and we have also left out carcinogens like paraffin, paraben, phthalates, colorants, uv inhibitors, lead, zinc, and chemical stabilizers. Additionally, our candles and wax melts are only made from components that pass California Proposition 65, which is designed to keep harmful chemicals out of products that we use.
Buying a clean burning candle with high-quality USA farmed wax and high quality eco-friendly fragrance oils, no known toxic additives, and eco-friendly wicks is paramount, along with, proper care and maintenance of your candles, such as trimming the wick to 1/4 inch before each use, blowing out your candle when you have gotten to a 1/2” melt pool per lighting, and discontinuing use when down to 1/2” of wax at the bottom of your jar. This can help reduce soot and enhance your candle experience, allowing you to enjoy a cleaner, more sustainable burn. This way, you can ensure a healthier environment for you, your loved ones, your home, and the Earth. Find yours at www.healinglightsoycandles.com.
